A customer named Meera approached me with an unhappy expression on her face when we first met. For years, she had been fighting dry, frizzy hair. She described how her hair was always out of control, especially after heat styling. It felt like straw, and was made worse by the harsh conditions.
No matter how many products she tried, nothing seemed to work. Meera was at her breaking point.
As a cosmetic formulator, I could relate to the difficulty. I reassured her that we could work together to find a solution that would not leave her hair oily or heavy.
Many people nowadays struggle with dry, frizzy hair, and like Meera, these issues are sometimes made worse by environmental pressures and frequent heat styling, and inadequate hydration.
From the point of view of a formulator like me, developing a solution that successfully tackles these issues while staying lightweight and adaptable is both an art and a science.
I am excited to discuss the process of creating Argan & Phytolipid Oil Shots for Frizzy Hair, a product that hydrates, nourishes, and tames unmanageable hair. Let us examine its advantages, creation method, and recommendations for optimizing its efficacy.
It is important to understand the problem of ‘Dry and Frizzy Hair’.
Lack of moisture and cuticle damage cause hair to become dry and frizzy. This issue is made worse by elements including excessive use of heat styling equipment, harsh shampoos, humidity, and chemical treatments. Hair becomes dry, brittle, and prone to frizz when the cuticle, the outermost covering of the hair, is broken or raised allowing moisture to escape.
How to identify Dry, Frizzy Hair?
Given that dry, frizzy hair can often appear in several ways, it is rather simple to recognize. A number of common characteristics can be used to make it easy so that anyone can differentiate between dry and frizzy hair. If there are any of the following conditions the task can be accomplished.
- Hair is said to lack shine when it seems lifeless and lacks the inherent gloss that comes from well hydrated strands.
- A damaged cuticle layer is the cause of rough hair texture, which is felt when the hair feels coarse or harsh to the touch.
- As hair becomes more dry, the hair shaft becomes weaker, leading to split ends and more frequent breakage.
- Frizz and Loose hair that flies away and looks fluffy and has strands sticking out, especially in humid situations.
- It is well known that dry hair is more likely to become tangled because the damaged cuticles do not lie flat.
You can check your hair in different conditions, including after washing or in a humid atmosphere, to verify its condition. By analyzing the hair condition based on this information, you can identify the condition of your hair.
How Big is the Problem of Dry, Frizzy Hair?
Dry, frizzy hair is a widespread concern affecting people of all hair types and ages. It is caused due to multiple factors as mentioned earlier. These include;
- Environmental Stressors include exposure to UV rays, pollution, and harsh weather conditions which can strip hair of its natural oils.
- Overuse of heat styling equipment like hair dryers, curling irons, and straighteners damages the hair cuticle and depletes moisture.
- Many chemical processes like coloring, perming, and relaxing compromise the integrity of the hair.
- Using harsh shampoos, skipping conditioning, or frequent washing can increase dryness of hair. Age too plays a role, as with age the scalp produces less sebum, leading to drier hair.
Dry and frizzy hair is not just about aesthetics, it can affect one’s confidence and level of comfort, making it a significant concern in the realm of personal care.
With all these concerns in mind, the solution that I can see as a formulator lies in Argan & Phytolipid Oil Shots. To address the problem of dry and frizzy hair, this product must have the following characteristics.
- It must replenish lost moisture and deeply hydrate the hair shaft to restore balance.
- It must repair and protect the hair cuticle by reinforcing the hair’s natural lipid barrier to prevent further damage.
- The product must provide manageability and be able to smooth the cuticle and offer frizz control and shine.
So I set out to design an oil that can address the root causes of dryness and frizz.
How does my Argan & Phytolipid containing oil work?
The oil is known for its hydration properties. This oil penetrates deep into the hair shaft and replenishes lost moisture. I have made use of ingredients like argan oil and phyto lipids as they repair the damage caused to the hair and help soothe the cuticle, and restore elasticity. This combination in the hair oil formula shields against environmental stressors and heat damage. Also this oil is versatile and is suitable to be applied daily as it is lightweight and non greasy.
While discussing with my team we emphasised on designing the formulation that combines the power of two key ingredients and their synergy. We found that
- Argan Oil which is known as ‘liquid gold’ is rich in fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin E. It hydrates, repairs, and smooths the hair while providing heat protection.
- Phyto lipids that are obtained from Soybean are the plant derived lipids that are similar to natural lipids in healthy hair. They improve moisture retention, enhance elasticity, and smooth the hair cuticle.
- When combined, these oils offer a synergistic effect as they form a powerful duo that restores elasticity, reduces frizz, and imparts a natural shine.
We realised that together, these ingredients can create a synergistic blend that transforms dry, frizzy hair into soft, manageable locks.
Formulation Design Overview

Fractionated Coconut Oil
INCI Name: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride
Coconut oil is non comedogenic and fast absorbing. It is also rich in medium chain triglycerides, primarily caprylic and capric acids, which are antimicrobial and nourishing. Coconut acts as a lightweight emollient which deeply moisturizes the scalp and hair without leaving it greasy. It enhances the absorption of active ingredients into the scalp and hair shaft and provides a protective barrier to reduce moisture loss.
Argan Oil
INCI Name: Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil
Argan oil is High in fatty acids like oleic and linoleic acids and antioxidants like vitamin E. It deeply hydrates and nourishes dry hair, reducing breakage and split ends and so helps repair damaged hair and also protects it against environmental stressors. It is Non greasy and absorbs well so it is ideal for all hair types. Argan oil smooths the hair cuticle, enhancing shine and manageability. It acts as a natural heat protectant during styling.
Soybean Glycerides (Phytolipid Complex)
INCI Name:Glycine Soja (Soybean) Glycerides
Soybean glycerides are the Phytolipid complex that is derived from soybeans as they are rich in essential fatty acids. They resemble the natural lipid content of healthy hair. It is suitable for hydrating and repairing hair structure. Soybean glycerides replenish natural lipids in the hair shaft, improving elasticity and moisture retention. It helps restore the hair’s protective lipid barrier, reducing frizz and strengthens hair strands, minimizing breakage.
Jojoba Oil
INCI Name: Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil
Structurally similar to natural sebum, jojoba oil is highly biocompatible, non greasy, lightweight, and absorbs easily. It contains vitamins (A, E, D) and fatty acids that nourish hair. It acts as a natural emollient, deeply hydrating the hair and scalp. Jojoba oil helps to balance scalp sebum production, making it suitable for both oily and dry scalps. It also improves hair elasticity and reduces brittleness.
Vitamin E
INCI Name: Tocopherol
Vitamin E is found naturally in vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds. It conditions and strengthens hair, reducing breakage and provides added UV protection for hair exposed to the sun. Vitamin E acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting the hair and scalp from free radical damage. It helps preserve the stability and shelf life of oils in formulations and promotes scalp health by improving circulation and hydration.
Rosemary Essential Oil
INCI Name: Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil
Rosemary oil contains active compounds like rosmarinic acid and camphor, known for anti-inflammatory benefits. It is a potent, natural astringent that helps balance scalp oil production. It also has aromatherapeutic benefits which are calming and possess an invigorating scent. Rosemary oil stimulates blood circulation to the scalp, encouraging hair growth. It has antifungal and antimicrobial properties, promoting a healthy scalp. These properties also help to reduce dandruff and irritation while adding a fresh, herbal fragrance.
Squalane
INCI Name: Squalane
Squalane is derived from plant sources like olives, sugarcane, etc. it is non greasy, fast absorbing, and highly stable ingredient that mimics natural squalene found in sebum, making it highly compatible with hair and skin. Hence squalane provides lightweight, long lasting hydration to hair and scalp and enhances moisture retention by forming a protective barrier which improves hair texture, leaving it soft, smooth, and shiny.
All these ingredients work synergistically to create a nourishing, lightweight, and effective product for combating dryness, frizz, and dullness in hair care formulations.
Formulation process:
- Sterilize and Clean all tools and containers. To set up the space, sanitize the workstation and place the glass mixing bowl and a stainless-steel stirrer.
- Add argan oil, Phytolipid complex, coconut oil and jojoba oil into the mixing bowl. Gently stir to ensure a homogenous base.
- Weigh and add squalane to enhance moisture retention. Next add the antioxidant tocopherol to stabilize the formula and protect the oils from rancidity.
- Now add the rosemary essential oil for a natural, herbaceous scent and scalp stimulation. Stir the mixture for 5–10 minutes to ensure uniformity.
- For Packaging transfer the oil shots into sterilized amber glass dropper bottles to protect the formulation from light. Once the oil is bottled make sure you label it properly.
As a rule generally the Label should show the following information:
- List of Ingredients: Place active ingredients and major contributors to the formulation.
- Instructions of Use: Apply 2-3 drops directly to the scalp and massage gently. Leave overnight or for at least 2 hours before washing. AND
- Storage Recommendations: Store in a cool, dark place to maintain ingredient potency.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
- Oil Separation: Ensure all oils are thoroughly mixed; use a magnetic stirrer for better results.
