I am very excited to talk about a potent and successful solution in the form of a serum that is aimed for dandruff control serum. This serum is formulated by me and contains lactylate and piroctone olamine. As a formulator I would like you to understand the process of formulating an effective product.

Before we start we try to go into the science behind the cause of the problem.  Now,  allow me to briefly explain how this product was conceptualised and created from my standpoint as a professional formulator.

We start with the formulator’s journey of inspiration, research, selection of ingredients, formulation and end result.

How did I get the inspiration?

Anjali, a longtime acquaintance, sent me an email on a crisp winter morning, which was the beginning of it all. She was dealing with a humiliating dandruff issue that appeared to become worse in the winter. Like many others, Anjali has tried numerous shampoos and treatments with little to no success. Her frustration sparked a challenge in me. Could I create a serum that would truly make a difference?

    Hence began The Research Phase

The first step was making her understand Dandruff. How could one distinguish dandruff from its symptoms, and what were the potential causes?

Dandruff is characterized by flaking and itching of the scalp. While it is not harmful, it can be persistent and embarrassing, significantly impacting an individual’s confidence.

    The Common Causes and Symptoms of Dandruff are;

    • Malassezia is a yeast-like fungus that is naturally present on the scalp and can multiply excessively under certain conditions, leading to irritation and flaking resulting in dandruff.
    • One more severe form of dandruff is when there is presence of inflammation, redness, and large flakes. This is caused due to excess sebum secretion by the glands and is known as Seborrheic Dermatitis.
    • When there is cold weather, low humidity, or excessive use of harsh chemical hair products that can accumulate on the scalp or dry out the scalp. Thess are some common reasons that cause dandruff.

Major symptoms that need to be looked for to identify dandruff are; white or yellowish flakes on the scalp and hair, Itching or irritation, Redness or inflammation or scalp dryness or oiliness

Now comes the Solutions! How to control Dandruff?

Cleaning, exfoliation, and customized therapies are frequently necessary for effective dandruff management. Oil-based treatments can provide intensive scalp care by delivering active ingredients directly to the problem area.

    Some actions include;

    • There should be an antifungal treatment to control Malassezia, the yeast-like fungus.
    • Exfoliate the scalp to remove dead skin cells and unclog the hair follicles.
    • Condition and hydrate the scalp and soothe the scalp and reduce dryness.
    • Lightweight oils should be used to balance the sebum production without clogging pores.

The Need for a Dandruff Control Serum

With this information in hand, I started researching and searching for ingredients that might address the underlying reasons for dandruff. Finding ingredients that would moisturize the scalp, inhibit fungal growth, and offer a long-term remedy for individuals like Anjali was my aim.

I discovered lactylate, an ingredient renowned for its superior moisturizing and skin conditioning qualities, while conducting my research. It keeps the scalp moisturized and healthy by helping in the restoration of its natural barrier. However, I was aware that the persistent flakes would not be resolved by hydration alone.

    Key Ingredients and Their Functions

At that point, I learned about the potent antifungal drug piroctone olamine. One of the primary causes of dandruff, Malassezia yeast, is the target of this product. Together, these two ingredients seemed like the perfect match. One would work to hydrate and protect the scalp and the other to fight off the root cause of the fungal yeast.

Where do you get these Ingredients from? Are they natural?

    Lactylate:

Lactylate is derived from lactic acid, a natural component found in milk. It is known for its moisturizing and skin conditioning properties. As I researched more about Lactylate, I realized that it has potential to improve the scalp’s barrier function. This meant that it could keep the scalp hydrated and less prone to dandruff induced by dryness. The additional ability of Lactylate to enhance the penetration of other active ingredients made it a valuable addition to the serum.

    Piroctone Olamine:

Piroctone Olamine is an antifungal compound that caught my attention due to its effectiveness against Malassezia yeast. This yeast is a common cause behind dandruff. Piroctone Olamine works as an antimicrobial and attacks the cell membrane of the yeast, leading to its breakdown. This ingredient then becomes a critical ingredient in dandruff control, and I knew it had to be a part of my formulation.

    Aloe Vera Juice:

Aloe Vera Juice is derived from the leaves of the aloe vera plant and is chosen for its soothing and hydrating properties. Being rich in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, Aloe vera moisturizes the scalp, reduces inflammation, and promotes a healthy environment for the scalp, making it an important ingredient in my anti-dandruff formulation.

    Glycerin:

Glycerin, a humectant, is a basic ingredient in many skincare products. It attracts moisture to the scalp and ensures it stays hydrated. During my research, I found that glycerin has the ability to retain moisture. This made it an ideal choice for dealing with dryness and preventing dandruff.

    Panthenol:

Panthenol, also known as Pro Vitamin B5, is known for its moisturizing properties. It improves the hydration and elasticity of the scalp, soothing irritation and reducing flakiness. Its role in the serum is to provide long lasting moisture and comfort to the scalp.

    Allantoin:

Allantoin is a soothing agent derived from the comfrey plant. It helps to protect the scalp from dryness and irritation, making it an essential ingredient in the serum. Its anti-irritant properties ensure that the scalp remains calm and comfortable.

    Hydroxyethylcellulose:

Hydroxyethylcellulose is a thickening agent that gives the serum its consistency which is easy to handle and apply. It ensures that the serum is stable and can be evenly distributed across the scalp.

    Formulation Design

I choose ingredients based on their functionality and compatibility with each other.

    • Lactylate is selected for its emulsifying and skin conditioning properties. It helps maintain a healthy scalp barrier and enhances the effectiveness of other ingredients.
    • Piroctone Olamine is an antifungal agent effective against Malassezia yeast which is a common cause of dandruff.
    • Aloe Vera Juice is used for its hydrating properties.
    • Glycerin is a humectant that draws moisture into the scalp thereby combating dryness.
    • Panthenol helps provide moisture and improves the elasticity of the scalp.
    • Allantoin is an anti-inflammatory agent that Soothes and protects the scalp from irritation. It also acts as an exfoliant.
    • Hydroxyethylcellulose is a thickening agent to achieve the desired viscosity of the serum and maintain an ideal consistency of the serum.
    • Preservatives are used to ensure product stability and safety.

Piroctone Olamine: This antifungal agent reduces the growth of Malassezia yeast on the scalp, which is a common cause of dandruff. It works by disrupting the yeast’s cell membrane, leading to its breakdown and eventual reduction.

Aloe Vera Juice: Deeply hydrates and soothes the scalp. Provides anti-inflammatory and healing properties and Strengthens hair strands and promotes shine.

Glycerin:A humectant that attracts moisture to the scalp, aiding in hydration and preventing dryness.

Panthenol: Also known as ProVitamin B5, Panthenol has excellent moisturizing properties. It improves the hydration and elasticity of the scalp, soothing irritation and reducing flakiness.

Optiphen™ BSB-N: Ensures the serum remains free from microbial contamination during its shelf life.

    Formulation Process:

Ensure all equipment and workspace are sanitized to prevent contamination. Precisely measure all ingredients using calibrated scales to maintain formula accuracy.

Mixing: In a clean mixing container, combine water and glycerin. This is the base for our serum. Dissolve Piroctone Olamine in the water and glycerin mixture. Continuous stirring ensures even dispersion.

Emulsification: Add Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate (Lactylate) while stirring. This step emulsifies the formula, ensuring a stable mixture. Incorporate Panthenol and Allantoin. These ingredients enhance the serum’s moisturizing and soothing properties.

Thickening: Slowly add Hydroxyethylcellulose while stirring to avoid clumping. This gives the serum its desired consistency.

Preservation: Add the preservative blend to ensure the serum remains free from microbial contamination.

pH Adjustment: Measure the pH of the final mixture. The target pH is around 5.5, which matches the natural pH of the scalp. If necessary, adjust the pH using a buffer solution to achieve the desired level.

    Testing

    • Stability Testing: Ensure the serum remains stable under different conditions (temperature variations, light exposure).
    • Microbial Testing: Regularly test for microbial growth to ensure the preservative system is effective.
    • User Testing: Have a panel of users test the serum for effectiveness and any potential irritation.

Where do you get these Ingredients from? Are they natural?

    Troubleshooting

    • If the formulation separates due to Incorrect emulsifier concentration or improper mixing then adjust the emulsifier level and ensure continuous and thorough mixing during the emulsification process.
    • If there is any Irritation experienced on application it could be due to the high concentration of active ingredients or sensitivity to certain components. The answer is to reduce the concentration of active ingredients and perform patch tests to identify the irritant.
    • If the Viscosity is too thin or too thick then adjust the amount of Hydroxyethylcellulose to achieve the desired serum thickness.
